Senior guide

The Bystraya River is one of those places in Kamchatka where you can really feel nature in all its wild yet welcoming character. There are no difficult rapids or extreme sections here, so we safely take people without prior experience, families with children, and anyone who simply wants to relax out in nature.

Schedule for 2026

Period June - September

Price for 1 person:

A one‑day rafting trip on the Bystraya River is a relaxed water journey in Kamchatka designed for people with no prior rafting experience. The section of the river is chosen so that the current remains lively and interesting, but without serious rapids or technically difficult parts. Along the route you will see classic Kamchatka landscapes: hills, volcanoes on the horizon, densely overgrown riverbanks, and frequent traces of wild animals near the water.

The day’s program usually combines several types of recreation: an unhurried raft descent, a hot lunch on the shore, a short trial salmon fishing session during the spawning season, and a final bathing in thermal springs. In a single trip, you manage to spend time actively, get a bit of adrenaline, observe nature, take vivid photos with volcanoes in the background, and then relax in warm mineral waters.

Part 1

Transfer to the Bystraya River – start of the rafting trip

We depart from Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky at around 8:00 a.m. The drive to the rafting put‑in takes about 2 hours, depending on road conditions. Along the way, the guide talks about the history of Kamchatka’s exploration, the local rivers, and what makes the Bystraya River different from other popular routes.

Before the start of the rafting, you receive your gear: life jackets, helmets, and boots (if needed). The instructor gives a detailed safety briefing on the water: how to sit correctly in the raft, how to hold the paddle, and what to do in case of accidentally falling into the water. After that, any items that might get wet are packed into dry bags, and the whole group takes their seats in the rafts.

Part 2

Rafting on the Bystraya River with a stop for fishing and lunch

The rafting itself on the Bystraya River takes on average 3–4 hours. The current is lively, but the route is selected so that the sections are suitable for people without special training. The guide controls the movement of the raft, tells you when to paddle and when you can just put the paddle down and enjoy the scenery. Along the banks you can often see bear tracks, and in the distance — the silhouettes of volcanoes.

During the Pacific salmon run (spawning periods), a short stop is made for trial fishing. It lasts about 30 minutes and is not a full trophy fishing trip: the goal is to give guests the opportunity to try catching spawning salmon, feel how it bites on the hook, and take a few memorable photos. The fishing format fully complies with current regulations: the guide will explain in advance what is allowed and what is not.

After the fishing stop or as you progress along the route, lunch is served on the riverbank. Usually this is a hot dish, snacks, tea or coffee. While the food is being prepared, you will have time to walk along the shore, take photos, and listen to the guide’s stories about Kamchatka’s wildlife and the features of the Bystraya River itself. After lunch, the group returns to the rafts and covers the remaining stretch of the route to the finish point near the Japanese Bridge.

Part 3

End of the rafting trip: Japanese Bridge – Malki hot springs

The final point of the rafting route is near the Japanese Bridge — a well‑known landmark that often appears in tourist photos and Kamchatka guidebooks. Here the rafts are pulled ashore, participants collect their belongings and change into warm, dry clothes. We have time to have a snack, drink hot tea or coffee, and share impressions of the river journey.

Next, we board the minibus and head to the Malki hot springs. The drive usually takes about half an hour, slightly more or less depending on road conditions. On site, we are greeted by natural thermal pools with different water temperatures. A leisurely soak after an active day on the river helps you relax and relieve muscle fatigue.

Once everyone has finished bathing and changed clothes, we start our return trip to the city.

Popular questions

Is prior rafting experience required to join the Bystraya River trip?

No, this route is designed for beginners. Before the start, all participants receive a safety briefing, and on the water the group is accompanied by an experienced rafting guide‑instructor.

Will there be fishing during the excursion?

Yes, but only during the salmon spawning season and if the fish are running. The fishing is short — about 30 minutes — and is not considered a full fishing tour. It is more an opportunity to try catching salmon and take a few photos.

Is rafting on the Bystraya River dangerous, are there any rapids?

A relatively calm section of the river is chosen: the current is lively, but serious rapids and technically difficult areas are avoided. For additional safety, life jackets are used, and the rafts are highly stable.

Can children join the rafting trip on the Bystraya River?

Yes, this is one of the most suitable water routes in Kamchatka for family groups. The minimum age for children is 5 years. Participation conditions are confirmed at the time of booking, depending on the water level and the season.

How long does the entire excursion on the Bystraya River take?

On average, the one‑day tour lasts 10–12 hours including transfers: morning departure, rafting on the river, short fishing session, lunch, visit to the Malki hot springs, and return to the city.

What should I wear and take with me for rafting on the Bystraya River?

On the water you may encounter wind, splashes, and changing weather, so it’s best to dress in layers. Suitable clothing includes warm thermal underwear, a fleece jacket, a wind‑ and waterproof jacket, and light trousers that dry quickly. Footwear should be sturdy, closed, non‑slip, and something you don’t mind getting wet (sneakers, trekking boots, or rubber boots depending on the season). Be sure to bring a spare set of dry clothes to change into after the rafting, a hat for sun protection, sunglasses, sunscreen, and any personal medication.

For visiting the Malki hot springs, you will need a swimsuit/swim trunks, a towel, and optionally rubber flip‑flops.

Is it possible to see bears and other wildlife?

The route along the Bystraya River passes through areas rich in wildlife, so the chances of encountering animals are quite high, especially during the salmon run. Bears often come to the water to feed; you may spot Steller’s sea eagles in the trees and sky, and gulls, sandpipers, ducks, and other waterfowl along the banks. Wildlife observation is done from a safe distance: before the tour begins, the guide explains how to behave when animals appear so as not to disturb them and not to create any risk for the group.

Is the rafting trip conducted in rain and bad weather?

Light rain alone is not a reason to cancel the rafting trip: participants have protective gear, and proper clothing helps you feel comfortable even in damp weather. A decision to cancel or reschedule is made if conditions are forecast that could make the trip unsafe: strong storm winds, a sharp rise in water level, thunderstorms, or dangerous local phenomena. In such cases, we offer to move the excursion to another date or replace it with an alternative program.
