We created this 2‑day volcano trip in response to numerous requests from our guests. It’s not long enough to really feel the hardship of leaving everyday comforts behind, yet the immersion into the atmosphere of wild Kamchatka increases many times over. We will climb one of the most accessible volcanoes in southern Kamchatka — Gorely, look into its craters, watch the sunset from the tent camp, and in the morning head to the Dachnye hot springs.

The itinerary is comfortable for people with average physical fitness: during the ascent we won’t rush, as there is no need to return to the city the same day. We will have a camp in a scenic location and a cook who takes care of all the meals.

Part 1

Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky — Vilyuchinsky Pass — Gorely Volcano

We start the morning at the Petropavlovsk Hotel, located at the exit from the city. The group gathers here, meets the guide, and checks clothing. After a short briefing, we load into the vehicle and head towards the area of Gorely Volcano. Just a few kilometres later, open Kamchatka landscapes appear outside the windows: elongated cinder cones, colourful tundra, deep riverbeds, and patches of snow that remain in hollows and on northern slopes even in the height of summer.

The first long stop is planned at Vilyuchinsky Pass. We walk out to a viewpoint with good views of Vilyuchinsky Volcano, the surrounding ridges, and valleys. This is a place where you can clearly feel the scale of Kamchatka’s relief: steep slopes, open sky, constantly changing light. Participants can take a leisurely walk along the pass, take photos, sit on the edge of the plateau, and simply get used to the mountain air.

After a break, we get back into the vehicle and continue towards Gorely. Closer to the foot, the road becomes “wild” or disappears altogether: more volcanic stones, dwarf cedar thickets, and rough sections. At times we drive over complete off‑road terrain. Upon arrival at the chosen campsite, we begin setting up camp: choosing places for tents, the kitchen, and the common area. The guide and assistants show how best to pitch the tents and where it is more convenient to store your belongings. Meanwhile, our cook lights the burners and prepares hot food so that, upon returning from the excursion, participants can regain their strength over a tasty dinner. After a short rest, there is a detailed briefing on the ascent, personal gear is checked, and only then does the group set out on the hiking route towards the craters of Gorely Volcano.

The ascent follows the classic trekking route: the elevation gain is gradual, without technically difficult sections, but it does require stamina and comfortable footwear. Along the way, views open up of lava fields, solidified flows, old craters, and the plateau. At the top, we inspect the active crater “Blue Lake” and walk along the sheer cliffs. Here we take a rest stop, take photos, and fix in our memory the mountain ranges of Kamchatka.

After exploring the summit area of the volcano, we descend back to camp along the same route. Upon return, a hot dinner from the cook awaits us, where we will share the day’s impressions. In the evening, in clear weather, the starry sky is often visible — very close and bright at this altitude. We spend the night in tents at the equipped camp at the foot of Gorely.

Part 2

Camp at Gorely — Dachnye Hot Springs — waterfall on the Spokoyny stream

We start the morning with a hearty breakfast in camp and packing up. The cook prepares a hot meal and drinks, while the group takes down the tents and packs personal belongings. Once the camp is dismantled and the vehicle is loaded, we set off towards the Dachnye springs at the foot of Mutnovsky Volcano.

On arrival at the Dachnye hot springs, we take a walk to the thermal field. Here you can feel how geothermal energy literally lives under your feet: wisps of steam, hot streams, small fumaroles, and warm ground.

After the excursion, we gather and drive back towards the city. On the way, we stop at the waterfall on the Spokoyny stream. A short walk leads to a large, scenic cascade flowing down dark rock walls in a narrow gorge. Here you can take photos, breathe the cool, humid air, and once again feel the contrast: yesterday’s warmth of the hot springs and today’s freshness of mountain water.

After visiting the waterfall, we return to the vehicle and continue driving to Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky, arriving in the city at around 20:00–22:00.

Popular questions

What kind of insurance do you need?

Travel insurance must be taken out for the excursion. You can take out insurance for outdoor activities at any insurance company. The following options must be selected: ‘trekking‘/’mountain trekking up to 3000 m’. Other details are optional.

What level of physical fitness is required to climb Gorely Volcano?

The route to Gorely is considered an easy trekking ascent. It is suitable for people with basic physical fitness: if you can walk for several hours over uneven terrain and do not have serious health restrictions, you will manage. The pace is moderate, with stops for rest and photos.

Is this tour suitable for a first visit to Kamchatka?

Yes, this is one of the best options for a short tour in Kamchatka. In 2 days you will see an active volcano, a pass with panoramic views, geothermal activity, and a waterfall. This format lets you experience camping, trekking, and volcanic landscapes without going on long expeditions.

What is included in the meals and who cooks the food?

The entire tour is accompanied by a field cook. They are responsible for hot breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, as well as tea, coffee, and light snacks. The menu is adapted to the format of an active tour: simple, hearty, hot dishes. When booking, you can inform us in advance about any dietary preferences or allergies so that we can take them into account when planning supplies.

Will there be mobile reception along the route and at the camp?

There is no mobile reception along most of the route, especially in the camp area near Gorely and at the Dachnye hot springs. The guide has means of communication provided by the tour’s safety program, but you should not count on having constant mobile internet.

Can I go with children?

This is decided individually. As a rule, the tour is recommended for teenagers from 12–14 years old, provided they are physically active and ready for hiking load and overnight stays in tents. For small children, the route may be too difficult due to the ascent and field conditions.

When is the best time to take this tour in summer?

The main season is from late June to early September, when the approach to the volcano is accessible, there are fewer snow patches on the trail, and the air temperature is comfortable. In July–August, the days are more stable in terms of weather, but fog and rain are possible, and you need to be prepared for this in your gear.

  • In nature

There are still places on the territory of Kamchatka where there is no infrastructure and accommodation only in tents is possible. Usually these are the most remote areas from civilisation, where most tourists do not visit. When visiting such locations we take with us tourist tents, as a rule, two-seater tents by Greenell. Tourists bring with them a sleeping bag, which is considered a personal item. It is not recommended to rent a sleeping bag. All belongings on our tours are transported by vehicle, you will not have to carry a heavy rucksack.
