One of the most active and highest volcanoes on the planet is located in Kamchatka! We will tell you how to get there and share its coordinates.
The Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano is located in one of the most remote regions of Russia — the Kamchatka Peninsula, near the village of Klyuchi, 60 km from the Pacific Ocean coast.
The mountain is an almost perfectly shaped cone with slopes inclined at 33 degrees. The giant’s height ranges between 4,750 and 4,850 m and today reaches 4,822 m.
Klyuchevskaya Sopka is one of the most active volcanoes not only in Kamchatka, but in all of Eurasia. The magma output during its eruptions can reach up to 6,000 tons per year. By comparison, a similar volume of volcanic material is released to the surface by all the volcanoes of the Kuril–Kamchatka arc combined.
The giant’s coordinates are 56°04′ N and 160°38′ E. The volcano is located in the eastern part of Kamchatka. It is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, which stretches from Kamchatka southward, crosses the equator, and continues all the way to Mount Erebus in Antarctica. Within this ring, the highest percentage of the world’s earthquakes and eruptions occurs.
On the map, Klyuchevskaya Sopka lies close to its neighbors — the volcanoes Tolbachik, Bezymianny, Kamen, Ostraya Zimina, Malaya Zimina, Udina, and others. Together they form the Klyuchevskaya volcanic group, which is among the most thoroughly studied by volcanologists.
You can reach Klyuchevskaya Sopka either as part of an organized tour or on your own (which we do not recommend). First you need to get to the village of Klyuchi or the village of Kozyrevsk. Scheduled buses depart from the bus station. The trip to the villages takes about 9–10 hours. From there you must continue on foot or by high‑clearance vehicle to the foot of the volcano. On foot, your route will pass through dense forest full of wild bears and will take 1–1.5 days. By vehicle it will be faster, but the cost of the trip will be quite high.
If you prefer a comfortable format of travel without summiting the peak, you can choose a tour to the foot of Klyuchevskaya Sopka with walks in the surrounding area and no technical ascent — this is a safe way to see an active volcano and the north of Kamchatka in the company of experienced guides.
An even more expensive but faster option is to fly there by helicopter from Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky. A group can number 20–22 people, depending on the cabin layout and the amount of gear.
Climbing the volcano is an extreme type of tourism and requires special preparation. It may include visits to caves, glaciers, the canyon of the Studenaya River, and the only edelweiss meadow in Kamchatka. Once you reach the summit, you will be overwhelmed with awe — it’s not every day you can find yourself above the clouds. However, it is impossible to stay there for long. The altitude, gases from the crater, and thin air quickly make themselves felt: it becomes hard to breathe and you may feel dizzy. The most favorable season for climbing is from July to October.
