Senior guide
In winter, Avacha Pass turns into a different world: all around are snowy waves of frozen lava, sharp ridges of hills, and the powerful silhouettes of two volcanoes — Avacha and Koryaksky. This excursion is designed so that you can see this landscape without any physical training and without knowing how to drive a snowmobile.
A winter snowmobile excursion to Avacha Pass is an opportunity to see Kamchatka’s volcanoes without ascents or difficult hikes. You will be picked up from your hotel in Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky and taken to the start of the winter route, where you transfer to sleds pulled by a snowmobile. This is a sightseeing format, ideal for tourists with no prior experience who want to comfortably get acquainted with Avacha Volcano and Kamchatka’s mountain landscapes.
The snowmobile tour to Avacha Pass is available for untrained visitors: all the machines are operated by an instructor, while you simply enjoy the views of winter Kamchatka and photograph the scenery.
In the morning, the guides meet you at the Petropavlovsk Hotel, located at the exit from the city. We get acquainted, check your gear and clothing, and then the group departs in the direction of Avacha Volcano.
Along the way you will already be able to see the hills around Petropavlovsk, and as we gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly snowy and wild. Upon arrival at the start of the winter road to Avacha Pass, the head guide, Ivan Ivanovich, will conduct a safety briefing, explain the format of the trip, and go over the rules of conduct while moving. The group then transfers to special sleds attached behind the snowmobile, designed for the comfortable transportation of tourists.
Once all participants are seated, the snowmobile convoy sets off towards Avacha Pass. The machines are driven only by experienced instructors, so you don’t need any snowmobile driving skills — the excursion is fully suitable for people without prior training.
The route follows a special track laid for tracked vehicles (also called a snowmobile trail) among hills and snow‑covered lava fields. As we gain altitude, we get better views of the “home” volcanoes: to the left is the austere Koryaksky, and ahead is the massive cone of Avacha. The guide makes several stops at the most scenic spots: you can step out of the sleds, take photos, and listen to stories about Kamchatka’s volcanic history and eruptions.
At the foot of Avacha Volcano, you will have a chance to feel the scale of the surrounding space, examine the details of the terrain, and see how wind and snow reshape the landscape. If you wish, the group can take short walks near the sleds, staying within the safe zone.
We also plan a small snack of Kamchatka delicacies: red caviar and fish.
No, all snowmobile driving is done by the instructors. The tour is organized in a format where you ride in sleds that are attached behind the snowmobile.
Yes, the route is designed for regular travelers. You don’t need to hike up the mountain or walk long distances in the snow. Most of the time you spend in the sleds, and photo stops are made at accessible points at the foot of Avacha Volcano.
When dressing, you should follow the layering principle: choose warm winter thermal underwear, a wool sweater, windproof jacket and trousers, wool socks, winter boots, warm gloves, and a hat. This way you will be able to spend the whole day outdoors in sub‑zero temperatures.
The route follows a direction regulated by the natural park, taking into account avalanche and weather conditions. The guide may adjust the program based on the snow situation on site. If you follow the instructions and clothing recommendations, the excursion is conducted in a safe manner.
We accept children from 8 years old on this tour, provided they have warm clothing and feel well enough to spend a full day outdoors in the cold.
The average duration is 7 hours, including the transfer from the city, briefings, the sled ride, and stops at the foot of Avacha Volcano. The exact time depends on the weather, snow conditions on the route, and the group’s pace.
