How tours are organized in Kamchatka in summer
The summer months - July, August, and sometimes September - are the hottest tourist season on the peninsula. At this time people come to us for walks in the flowering alpine valleys, hikes to volcanoes, bear watching. Besides, in summer Kamchatka is as accessible as possible: you can reach distant spots by car, there are sea excursions with access to the ocean, and the most inaccessible points can be reached on foot, not only by helicopter.
Weather
In general, summer in Kamchatka is cool and cloudy, the air temperature is about +10 ℃, but this figure is the “hospital average”. In fact, the weather here varies dramatically and differs in various parts of the peninsula. Therefore, tourists who travel, for example, from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Kliuchevsky Park in the north of the peninsula, find themselves in completely different climatic conditions during the day.
On the coast, the weather is cooler, windy and foggy, and the sun and rain can change rapidly. This is most pronounced on the eastern, Pacific side, where tourists are more common, while the weather is slightly milder in the west. The warmest month on the coast is August. In the central part, surrounded by volcanoes, the summer is more like the average Russian summer: windless, warm, sometimes even hot - with maximum temperatures up to +30 ℃, the warmest month is July.
To be ready for the vagaries of Kamchatka weather, it is important to pack the right equipment: warm, waterproof and windproof clothes, sun protection, trekking boots. Then neither rain, nor snow, nor wind, nor the risk of getting burned will be terrible.

What to See and Do
In the summer in Kamchatka for everyone there will be entertainment according to taste and physical abilities: active rest or relax, contemplative or extreme, cultural enlightenment or immersion in the wilderness.
We tell you what exactly you can do on the peninsula in the summertime:
Visit the Valley of Geysers. The pearl of Kamchatka, one of the seven wonders of Russia, the only geyser field in Asia - the list of loud titles of this place can go on and on. But you already know that it is better to see the Valley of Geysers at least once with your own eyes. You can reach it only by helicopter, excursions are organized almost all year round, but the Valley looks most spectacular in summer, when geysers fountain on lush green slopes.
Meet volcanoes. There are many of them in Kamchatka, and they are very different from each other: there are active and extinct, with one crater and with several, with acid lakes and with smoking fumaroles, with a solid cone and destroyed. Let's list the most interesting ones, which can be climbed or viewed from a helicopter:
- «Domestic» — first of all, the active Koryaksky (3456 m) and Avachinsky (2741 m). The first one is the largest of this group, but only professionals climb to its summit, while thousands of tourists visit the top of Avachinsky every year. It offers a large-scale panorama of the city, the ocean, neighboring volcanoes and the Nalychevskaya Valley.
- Mutnovsky (2323 m) is one of the most active yet reachable volcanoes in Kamchatka. Inside its crater, an alien world with fumarole fields, mud pots, acid rivers opens up.
- Gorely (1828 m) is an active volcano, a neighbor of Mutnovsky. It is interesting for its landscape and craters with bright acid lakes.
- Kliuchevskoi (4750 m) is the largest active volcano on the continent. This giant is impressive in its own right, and recently it has been erupting frequently, so tourists come to it to admire the glowing lava flows at night.
- Tolbachik (3085 m) is known for powerful fissure eruptions, after which the green hollow nearby turned into a volcanic desert with dozens of cinder cones.
- Vilyuchinsky (2,173) is an extinct volcano with a regular cone shape. It is clearly visible from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and you can get a closer look at it from the nearby pass of the same name.

Going into the ocean. On a boat trip during the day you can see the nearest sights: Starichkov Island, inhabited by thousands of sea birds, Russkaya Bay, which is compared to the Norwegian fjords, pillar-shaped rocks of Three Brothers and other attractions.
Visit Khalaktyrsky beach. The vast flat ocean shore is an hour's drive from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. People come here to sunbathe on the volcanic sand, listen to the sound of waves, take a dip in the ocean or even take surfing lessons.
To watch bears. To see as many predators as possible in safe conditions, come to spawning reservoirs, such as lakes Azhabachy or Dvuyurtochnoye, and the Kamchatka River. But the most mass bear fishing takes place on Kuril Lake. Here you can watch dozens of bears at a time, as well as foxes, otters and huge Steller's sea eagles.
To visit eruption sites. The consequences of destructive volcanic activity are best explored in the Kliuchevsky Park near Tolbachik volcano: here you can see a cinder desert, scorched Dead Forest, and lava caves.
Walk through the flowery valleys. For rare flowers and emerald greenery with snow patches, go to the Nalychev Valley, the Vachkazhets mountain massif, the Blue Lakes, the Vilyuchinsky volcano or the same Kliuchevsky Park. In such places you can see rhododendron, Yatabe's slipper or delicate bellflower.
Swim in hot springs. If you have a chance, it is better to get to wild bathing places, for example, Nalychevskiye, Timonovskiye, Khodutkinskiye, Tumrokskiye or Banniye. Here you can relax surrounded by untouched nature without crowds of tourists.

Go fishing. Even if you have never been interested in it, you may enjoy fishing in Kamchatka - here beginners quickly get into the taste. Salmon species are well caught in the rivers and lakes, and during sea trips you can pull a goby or flounder from the ocean. River fishing is often combined with rafting - not necessarily sport rafting, we have tours where the guide-instructor is in charge of the boat's movement.
Learn about indigenous cultures. There are several ethno-settlements on the peninsula reconstructing the life of Koryaks, Itelmens, Even and Aleuts. For example, “Children of the North”, “Kainyran”, “Chau-Chiv”, “Pimchakh”, “Tanynaut”. Here guests are sung ancient songs, presented dances, told about ancestral traditions and treated to national dishes.
Learn about the history of Kamchatka. On a city tour around Petropavlovsk you will be told how this port city appeared, shown battle sites, monuments to military and navigators. Besides, many Kamchatka settlements have their own local history museum with historical expositions, and not far from Ust-Kamchatsk you can visit the oldest church on the peninsula - it was built by Cossacks back in the XVIII century.
Diving. The frowning and ascetic Pacific Ocean actually hides a colorful underwater world. Here you can see gardens of actinia, play with sea lions or swim in a “soup” of jellyfish.
It is hardly possible to combine all of the above into one tour. On the other hand, Kamchatka will not let you go headlong into one type of leisure: walks always include physical activity, and sports activities - relaxation. It is important to alternate them correctly and keep the balance. For this purpose guides, who know Kamchatka well, design tours. We have several time-tested programs - choose a suitable one or e-mail us and we will make an individual one for you.
